One of the things I say in my book is to walk through the process AHEAD of time because many don't know what the laws are and assume that a funeral director has to be involved. Richard had done enough legal research to know he had a right to handle it without a funeral director. What he failed to do was to make sure the local clerk knew that was legal, too, so getting the permit would be no problem when the time came.
