General Price Lists are mandated to be handed out to anyone who requests them. The Federal Trade Commission requires any person to be informed in advance about the purchase of a service for which he or she contracts
Much information is contained in the GPL, but the consumer needs to know how to find the information pertinent to his or her needs.
First, know what the description is talking about. For example, if a body needs to be sent to a location in a different state, there will be two charges: one from the funeral home preparing the body for shipment (forwarding,) and the other from the receiving mortuary.
When you do not understand, ask for an explanation of terms. Remember, it is YOUR money being spent.
Check the age of the GPL brochure. Is it dated within reason? If you need a casket, is that list included? If cremation is the option, do they own their own crematory, or will the charges for use of another's be added to the bill?
What about refrigeration charges? Often there is a delay in family and friends getting to the area from out of town, or there is a delay getting the death certificate or other documents, so the body needs to be refrigerated. What are the charges, or are they included?
What do the "services" of the funeral director and staff include? Do you really want to use the mortuary or would you prefer a memorial service at a different location?
A few minutes examining several General Price Lists will make you aware of where the emphasis is placed by the mortuary. Is this what you really want? Would you prefer something more relevant to your needs? Be creative! Make the celebration of LIFE just that, remembering the person whom you are honoring.
