Western Pennsylvania (formerly Pittsburgh Memorial Society) |
It took five years, a name change, and a change in the by-laws, but approval was finally granted to the Funeral Consumers Alliance of Western Pennsylvania for 501(c)(3) non-profit status, and FCAWP was designated a Public Charity under Section 170 of the Internal Revenue Code. This exempts the organization from paying federal taxes, makes it eligible to receive foundation grants and allows donors a deduction for their charitable gifts or bequests.
The arduous application process was shepherded by former FCAWP Treasurer Diane Nedved, who is an attorney and a CPA. For tireless efforts in securing the approval, she and her husband, Kimball, also a former board member, were honored at the September 10 board meeting.
The Board also acknowledged, with gratitude, a grant from the Becker Family Foundation. The award had been promised but was contingent on the receipt of the IRS determination letter.
