Red Casket, Blue Urn: Cremation's rise parallels national divergence in religion and politics

Cremation has grown dramatically in America in the past half-century — from under 4 percent of deaths to 41 percent today, and is still rising.

The increase follows the steady revolution in memorial practices that I wrote about earlier this week — with funerals increasingly becoming less traditionally religious, more customized and spiritual and in some cases entirely secular.

And the trend toward cremation says a lot about that.
