United States Member Organizations
The following nonprofit organizations are nonsectarian and are usually run by volunteers. They provide a wide range of funeral-planning information. The active groups have done a funeral price survey in their area, and many have negotiated a deep discount for members at certain cooperating funeral homes.
The practice of group planning for funeral arrangements started early in the 1900s in the Farm Grange organization in the Northwestern United States; members formed burial co-ops. From there, the idea spread to cities, often under church leadership. The People's Memorial Association of Seattle, organized in 1939, was the first such urban group. Societies spread gradually up and down the West Coast, then eastward across the United States and northward into Canada. The national organization was started in 1963.
Although the original reason why many joined funeral planning societies was to cut costs through cooperative buying power, a sense of social activism pervades the membership. It was the efforts of our organization that pushed the Federal Trade Commission to pass the "Funeral Rule" in 1982. We are actively involved in efforts to improve the Funeral Rule now. Whether it's simply through membership or if you choose to volunteer, your participation in a local Alliance will help to protect funeral consumer rights for years to come.
